Interpreting Explained
There are three types of interpreting which are most often used. Depending on the nature of the project or assignment, we provide the type of interpreting service which best suits the given task.
Our interpreters are highly skilled and experienced in the type of interpreting which they provide, and deliver a high quality service in all of the interpreting types listed below.
Simultaneous interpreting:
In this type of interpreting, the source language is interpreted as it is being spoken. This requires an experienced interpreter, who is capable of the rapid interpreting of a speech or discussion and conveying the meaning in the target language without any (or very little) delay.
Whispering: (simultaneous)
This is a specific type of simultaneous interpreting and is useful when there is no booth or microphone equipment available, or when a few people who do not speak the source language are present at a meeting or seminar where the majority of the participants do speak that language. The interpreter often sits or stands beside or behind the client and whispers a simultaneous interpretation to them.
Consecutive interpreting:
This type of interpreting is used in a wide range of situations, such as business discussions, contract negotiations, commercial, legal or technical discussions, court hearings, and so on. An interpreter listens to a speaker, often while taking notes, then conveys the speaker’s message in the target language. Sometimes a speaker may not use a script and so speaks freely, during which they may finish their speech or pause during it to allow the interpreter to speak in the target language at a reasonably fast speed. This type of service is popular among many of our clients.
Facilitating Interpreting
This type of interpreting is used to assist clients in a number of ways. For example, a client may have conversational English but wants to ensure precision at certain points, or may wish an interpreter to communicate for them in lengthy discussions when they become mentally fatigued. A direct effect of this is that the client can think in their own language, leaving the interpreter to concentrate on the target language. Some clients request a facilitating interpreter to assist them on non-business matters.
